You can see in the photo that the dovetails are beginning to fit together. They required more chiseling than I hoped, but at least I won't have to start over a third time to get them right. Here I am gently tapping them into place, but won't go all the way. By pulling them apart before final assembly I can see the places where they have rubbed during the trial fit, and I can adjust slightly with a chisel, so that when they are finally assembled, I won't have to force them together and risk cracking the wood.

dovetails fit!
