rock hounds!

Today at Clear Spring School, the 4th 5th and 6th grade students finished their kits for rock and mineral exploration as shown in the photo above. Later in the year, and as part of their study of earth science, they will travel to the diamond mine at Murfeesboro, Arkansas and also to the quartz crystal mines near Hot Springs. The mallets and chisels will enable the children to dig crystals out of crevices in rock. The sieves will be useful for diamond mining, and the collection trays will be used for the collection of rocks and minerals that will provide tangible evidence of learning. These four tools extend the engagement of the hands in learning, and extend the useful range of the school wood shop into classroom learning. Besides that, it is kind of cool to make your own tools.
