Making a knife box SD 480p
This simple band sawn knife box was featured in Woodcraft Magazine in September 2007. Two versions were offered, one in spalted maple and the other redwood with portions colored with leather dye. It illustrates the use of articulated barrel hinges and a flipping story stick to assure that the hinge holes are in perfect alignment. It's worth watching for that reason alone, as the same technique is useful for mini barrel hinges often used by box makers.

Hi Doug. I was reviewing my Google mail and found a discussion we had in 2007.
ReplyDeleteI appreciated your introduction to the blog and how much has unfolded since.
I’m not a regular blogger and I still have the hand metaphor as very powerful along the lines I originally posted.
Greetings between people have open hands. The Indian ‘namaste’ have left and right hands together pointing to the sky, the metaphor for universal unity. The ‘Western’ handshake of two right hands signifies agreement in a business dealing, and openness to manage together what issues might arise.
The closed fist affirms self. Or a resolute determination to fight whatever - against obstacles, an opponent and in war.
I love your notion of craft. Self-discipline of mind and heart is needed to achieve the guided and directed brilliance of the hand - as a unique creative expression of You.
I see you live in Eureka Springs. Powerful words. Eureka refers to Archimedes jubilant insight into the relationship between Mass and its Volume as Density. And Springs can refer to the powerful flood of further inner springs of insights down the ages concerning Mass, movement and Energy (Isaac Newton) and Mass, Energy and Speed of light (Einstein) - all of which tell of the wonder of the human person as having such extraordinary capabilities of a Spirit - able to invent, create and make (in words or wood) which inspire and give joy - as your blog has done so.
