my stroke

I had a stroke on December 1, 2024  while waiting to board a flight home to Arkansas. I was rushed to the hospital by ambulance from O'Hare Airport to Resurrection Hospital in Chicago where I underwent treatment for 17 days.  

I am currently home in Arkansas and receiving regular therapies. You may have wondered. I'll be back to my advocacy of hands-on learning when I am more able.

This illustrates a particular kind of wooden hinge used in making a recipe card box from black locust.

Making jigs for box making

I just finished a 3 day class at ESSA, making jigs for box making. It was a great deal of fun with 8 students, each making a variety of jigs useful for making fine wooden boxes.

In the photo I'm helping the students make dedicated router set ups for making finger joints.

Making a craftsman style bookcase

I made this white oak bookcase for my wife using hand cut dovetails and mortise and tenon joints. It was featured in Woodcraft Magazine in July 2007.

Making a knife box SD 480p

This simple band sawn knife box was featured in Woodcraft Magazine in September 2007. Two versions were offered, one in spalted maple and the other redwood with portions colored with leather dye. It illustrates the use of articulated barrel hinges and a flipping story stick to assure that the hinge holes are in perfect alignment. It's worth watching for that reason alone, as the same technique is useful for mini barrel hinges often used by box makers.

Vibration free camera stand

In order to take closeup videos of operations on the table saw, I purchased a clamp on camera mount, but found that the vibration of the saw affected the filming. So this isolated easy to make stand was the perfect solution. It's made with pocket screws and should be a thing easy enough for you to design and make for yourself.
