This blog is dedicated to sharing the concept that our hands are essential to learning- that we engage the world and its wonders, sensing and creating primarily through the agency of our hands. We abandon our children to education in boredom and intellectual escapism by failing to engage their hands in learning and making.

another finished rocker
Bob Bean sent this photo of his finished child's rocker started at my rocking chair class with Diablo Woodworkers in August 2007. Great work Bob. The workshop was one of those projects where the goal was more challenging than time would allow. I am honored that students like Bob have had this level of persistence and follow-through leading to heirloom work and growth.
I just read your article about woodworking for kids. I homeschool, and my oldest (soon to be 6) loves to build. I on the other hand, lack talent in that area! : ) It would be wonderful if you had a guide for other hs'ers in my position! Also, I would appreciate any insights and info you could send my way!
ReplyDeleteThanks soo much!
You will see a lot about woodworking with kids regularly in this blog. Richard Starr's book Woodworking with Kids is good and there are others out that would be helpful. John Kelsey new book is also good.
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to have a lot of experience yourself. Provide some simple tools, hammer, saw, and a good way to hold the wood. Either a large clamp on a work bench or a bench vise. the point of the vise is to keep the child from hammering or sawing his or her other hand.
Making things is more fun and engaging than most parents understand, and if you are looking for a way to get your children's noses off the computer screen and into real life, woodworking works.
I have articles published with Woodwork, Woodcraft, American Woodworker, Independent School and Encounter magazines. The Finewoodworking website has some of my how-to articles and will be publishing more. You will find that there is a huge amount of helpful information out there to get you and your son or daughter started.
For a second there I thought this blog post was going to be about Ozzy Osborne. ;-)
