It is said that two points create a line, but if you know something of the sequence in which the points are established, not only is a line formed, but as a vector, it describes movement and direction. That's why it makes a difference to understand the history of manual arts in America. By examining the starting point of manual arts we can gain insight into its future. Will it begin to play a renewed role in American education? Perhaps when we regain a sense of its beginnings it will point toward its destiny.
