One of the reasons that wood working is such an excellent craft for integration in school curriculum is that wood itself is such an excellent material for scientific investigation. Working with wood involves direct study of the material and the diverse species available for use. While crafting something from wood, direct powers of observation are cultivated. Two steps out of doors can lead those powers of observation directly into the woods and study of our natural environment.
